Santa Catalina, Panama is internationally famous for its long powerful right hand reef break. There are other activities available in Catalina, like great fishing and diving trips to Isla Coiba, but surfing is king. La punta, as it’s called by the locals, is one of the most consistent surf breaks and perfect waves, not only in Panama, but in all of Central America. It’s not uncommon for the Pacific Ocean to be flat in most of Panama, while La Punta in Santa Catalina has over head waves.
Santa Catalina is accessed by veering off the Pan-American Highway at Santiago and heading south through the small town of Sona. Catalina was discovered on the world map long ago, and though it is a very small town, there are plenty of lodging and restaurants in Catalina for the traveling surfer, fisherman or diver.
