Speeding Ticket!

Speeding Ticket, Panama

Every now and then the law catches up with you.  And last week it caught up with me.  After driving some-what successfully (only one fender bender) for over a month I got my first speeding ticket.

You see police all along the roadsides in Panama.  In most (notice I said most, pay attention to the signs) wide open highway roads the speed limit is 100 kilometers per hour.  When driving through towns it usually drops to anywhere between 40-80 kilometers per hour.  The police are stationed before and/or after these towns and all in between.  Sometimes they have radar…sometimes they do not.

Upon pulling me over, I explained to the officer that I did not speak much Spanish…he still proceeded to write me a ticket!  Twenty minutes later I was back on my way with a $50 ticket and a warning to slow down.

Minus the $50 it was quite a pleasurable experience!  So if you’re driving in Panama make sure to keep an eye on your speed!
