Brews and Futbol and Fried foods, OH MY! -La Rana Dorada

Named after Panama’s famous Golden Frogs, La Rana Dorada is one of the few places in Panama that brews it’s own beers. Located on Via Argentina next to Einstien’s head, La Rana Dorada is the kind of place one could easily spend hours in with old friends and making new ones.

I popped in on a Friday afternoon and the place was empty. The bar tender graciously gave me a sampling of each of the four brews they make; La Rana Pils, La Rana Pale Ale, La Rana Blanche and La Rana Porter. The last two nights my host family has served me Old Milwaukee with my dinner so while the brews at La Rana were not the best I’ve ever had, they certainly were tastier than the international beer of old men everywhere. My personal favorite of the four options was the porter. It had the most flavor and tasted super earthy which is a quality I like in my beer and my wine.

La Rana is mainly a bar but it also serves typical (and tasty) pub fare. The wings and burgers looked tasty as did the ooey gooey fried mozzarella balls.

The music was great. On my visit The Beatles and Beady Eye (one of my favorites, I’ve always been a sucker for the Gallagher boys) dominated the mix. Kudos to whoever was in charge of the playlist.

La Rana has outside, covered patio seating that provides excellent people watching. Or sit inside in the sleek, dark and supremely cosy booths and lose all track of time. Either way, La Rana Dorada is not a bad way to pass an afternoon or evening.

For under $20 one can enjoy several (a lady never tells) beers and a snack. On a scale of one (Chicken McNugget) to ten (homemade bacon and mom’s biscuits) La Rana Dorada gets a 8. Definitely worth a pop in during your next visit to the area.

Oh, and for those of you in the Casco Viejo area there is a location there as well in front of Centario(?) Park.
