Happy Birthday Panamanian Style

There is so much to do and see throughout Panama City but one of my most favorite activities has been spending time with my host family. It just so happened that my host father, Armando’s, birthday was last Thursday. We celebrated with a late night of BINGO, copious glasses of wine and what hands down may have been the sweetest, surgariest, most amazing birthday cake I’ve ever had.

Oh but it didn’t stop there! Throughout the day on Friday and Saturday countless amounts of well wishers came to extend their congratulations to Armando for reaching the ripe age of 69.

Sunday morning I woke up to the wonderful smell of bacon. But it wasn’t for breakfast. Armando and family were preparing a feast for later that afternoon. Sitting throughout the day and attempting to study was futile. Not only were the smells overwhelming, the sounds of my stomach growling distracting but the libations started almost immediately with breakfast. Campari in the morning? Sure, why not?!

The meal was finally served the cheesiest cheese ravioli, the largest ham you’ve ever seen, sautéed mustard greens with peppers and crusty delicious bread. There was plenty of wine, champagne, espresso and more birthday cake.

Marie, the youngest girl in the house describes it best, we are a Panamanian family who loves Italian food. It is impossible to stay slender in this house.
