Orchid House, Santa Fe, Panama

The Orchid House in Santa Fe is the private home of a woman who once was the mayor of Santa Fe.  And I am so sorry but for the life of me I cannot remember her name!  She and her husband will graciously open their home for you to come and view their private collection of orchids. At her home alone she has over 150 different species of orchids. From the tiniest orchid in the world to some that range in color from bright white, green and purple. It truly is spectacular to walk through her jungle of orchids.

The orchids in this area grow wild in the mountains and people take them and relocate them to their private gardens. The government does not allow them to sell them directly from their homes though. Which is why a lab is being created to breed the flowers and then sell them to the public. This way the wild orchids will be preserved for years to come.

When I asked her to point out her favorite orchid she laughed and said ” I love them all! They are like my children!”

Most days she is home but have your hotel call ahead and make sure she is available.  The Orchid House is located across the street from The Coffee Mountain Inn.

And seriously, take the time to stop and smell the flowers…but watch for spiders!!!
