Albergue, Home of Refuge, Santa Fe, Panama

Albergue, translated into english means refuge or home.  This is indeed the perfect name for the two places I visited while in Santa Fe.

Both of these homes provide a place to stay for those traveling down from the mountains to seek medical care.  It can be a long, treacherous walk and if a person is ill going back and forth for treatment is not an option.

Now, my Spanish isn’t very great but from what I gathered one of the homes is affiliated with the government.  They receive government funding and in order for a patient to stay there the treating doctor must sign off on it.  The second home I visited is run by a private gentleman and anyone receiving medical treatment in Santa Fe or Santiago is welcome.

Neither of the homes have the funds to provide food but room and board are given with no cost to the patient.  It is up to the patient and his or her family to provide food and  necessary medical supplies. The hope is that one day that will not be the case and all of the patients needs can be covered by the homes.

These two places brought me so much joy.  Click through the gallery below to see a little bit of what I saw.
