Dumpers Surf Bocas del Toro

Named after the old garbage dump that use to be across the street from the surf break, Dumpers is one of Bocas del Toro’s best left tubes. The wave comesbocas del toro surf in and ledges off a shallow reef, throwing a perfect barrel.  The wave continues along the reef long enough to get one or two turns in before one needs to eject due to the exposed reef. A little closer in is another peak suitably named Inside Dumpers.

Dumpers is out past Playa Paunch on the way to Playa Bluff. Though the wave at Dumpers is great the entrance and exit can be a little tricky.  One has to delicately walk out on the reef and then jump off a coral ledge into the surf near the peak of Inside Dumpers. The day we were there one of Bocas local surfers jumped off the ledge and his leash got caught on the reef and hung up. He hit the water while his board stopped in mid-air, slipped out of his hands and snapped back slamming into the coral ledge. We watched him while he climbed back up on to the reef ledge to pull the entangled leash out from the rocks whilst both him and his board were getting thrashed around by the waves.

Surfboards are very fragile items and any surfer cringes when watching a fiberglass board get beat around repeatedly on a hard object. It was painful for me to watch, so painful that I could not bare to take photos of it. Bad surfer karma.

Anyways, here are some shots from one afternoon when we stopped by to take a look at Dumpers, one of Bocas del Toro’s best reef breaks.
