Las Tablas

Las Tablas is considered the heart of Panamanian folk lore.  The capital of Los Santos Province, Las Tablas is renowned for its festive annual celebration of Carnaval.

Panamanians from all over the country gather each year to drink, dance and sing in the streets of Las Tablas for days on end. Each year Calle Arriba (upper streets) and Calle Abajo (lower streets) select a queen and  princesses to compete against each other in a friendly traditional battle.  The Calle’s each have their loyal followers and supporters complete with marching bands, indigenous drummers, fireworks, extravagant floats and their own unique anthems poking fun at the followers of their rival Calle.  It’s an interesting scene especially for those who understand spanish. Listening to hundreds of imbibed Panamanians singing in unison an anthem making fun of their neighbors while following behind a long line of floats is a feast for the eyes and ears!  Queens are selected and start training years in advance for their moment to represent their Calle. Carnaval is serious business in Las Tablas.

Most of the year Las Tablas is like most small interior towns in Panama; quiet, inexpensive and loaded with friendly, smiling people.  When driving down the Azuero Peninsula one has to pass through Las Tablas after Chitre and before arriving in Pedasi.  It’s a good place to park, stretch the legs, walk around town and enjoy one of Panama’s most famous dishes, Sancocho.  Sancocho is a chicken soup available at any of the street side eateries.

Remember, if you’re passing through during the Carnaval season, be ready to party!
